Pilot Light Problems
Pilot lights that won’t stay lit after following manufacturer instructions may reflect problems with thermocouples, gas valves, or wiring. Let us fix the issue safely!
Soot or Smoke
Excessive soot buildup or smoke coming from the fireplace indicates incomplete combustion or a venting problem. This can be a health hazard, so contact us today!
Yellow or Orange Flames
A healthy gas fireplace flame should burn blue. Call our team right away if you notice yellow or orange flames, which can lead to soot buildup and excess carbon monoxide.
Strange Noises
Unlike wood-burning fireplaces, gas models shouldn’t generally pop, crack, whistle, or roar. Let us inspect the gas supply and venting system if you hear unusual sounds.
Answers to Your Questions About Gas Fireplaces
Compared to their wood-burning counterparts, natural gas fireplaces are a clean-burning and efficient choice. However, they’re not immune to problems. Explore FAQs below or contact our plumbing team to get personalized advice!
Lighting a gas fireplace can vary slightly depending on the model, so be sure to reference your user manual for exact instructions. Before you begin, make sure the damper is open to allow proper airflow.
If your fireplace has a pilot light, ignite it. Once it’s lit, continue holding the pilot button for 20-30 seconds to allow the thermocouple to heat up. Then, turn the gas valve to “on” and use the control knob to adjust the flame height as needed.
If you have a fireplace with an electronic ignition or a standing pilot, you should be able to use a remote control or ignition button to turn it on. If these items don’t work, call Emerald Bay Plumbing to get it fixed!
If your fireplace doesn’t have a pilot light or igniter, turn the gas on to the minimal level with the provided key. Then, use a long match or lighter to ignite the flame. This setup is typically only found in older homes. To upgrade to a safer, more modern control system, contact the experts at Emerald Bay Plumbing!
Your gas valve should have a “pilot” setting — turn the switch to that setting. Then, press and hold the pilot button. If you have an igniter button, press it repeatedly until the pilot light ignites. If your fireplace has no igniter, use a long lighter or match to light it.
You may have to repeat this process several times to get the pilot to stay lit. However, if it won’t stay lit, contact Emerald Bay Plumbing for troubleshooting.
No. Because gas fireplaces are engineered specifically for natural gas, they don’t have the necessary safety features for burning wood. Wood burns hotter than gas, and the intense heat can damage a gas fireplace’s components.
There are also different venting considerations for these different fuel types, which means trying to burn wood in a gas fireplace could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning and fire hazards.
