- Close to where the water line enters the home: The main water line enters your home from the street, and the shutoff valve is usually located near this entry point.
- In a garage or mechanical room: If your home is built on a slab, the valve might be located in the garage, near the water heater, or in a utility area.
Most modern homes have a ball valve with a lever handle. To turn it off, simply turn the lever a quarter turn (90°) so it is perpendicular to the pipe (horizontal). If your home has a gate valve, turn the wheel clockwise (to the right) as far as it will go to shut off the water completely.
